The fusion splice (also called melt-splice or arc splice), is the most accurate and durable method for non-detachable connection of two optical waveguides.

At about 1725 ° C (2000 K), the prepared fiber ends are welded directly with electric arc to each other without additional aids. In this manner, a compound of the fibers is formed cohesively, and it is without an air gap. This makes the junction firm and reliable.
